A Jewelry Trend Born in Ancient Art Explodes in Hollywood

Written by SAM GLASER

It’s not everyday that Hollywood men and women adopt the same look. After gaining momentum for years, beaded earthstones have finally caught fire. From Jonny Depp to Lauren Conrad the style has attracted a diverse range of celebrities who layer multiple bracelets or necklaces.

Eartstones include gems like onyx, opals, hematite, tigers-eye and many other minerals and rocks with rich histories. Humans have been harvesting these natural treasures from the earth since ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Rome (~1000-3000 BC).

Today’s prevailing style dates back to 2000 BC, when the Sumerians created jewelry by stringing beads on wire. This same technique is influencing modern jewelry from brands including David Yurman, Stephen Webster, and DyOh. Certain designs even incorporate ancient elements and precious materials with production treatments like metal-oxidization. This jewelry offers a look that derives from the earth with vintage detailing while still creating a contemporary finished product.

Earthstones also represent a market reaction to the “bling-bling” look that is ultimately fading. After years of shiny gold, chunky silver, and sparkling rhinestones, fashion influencers are migrating away from flashy jewelry. Amid a global recession, earthstones offer a sophisticated, lower-priced, earth derived departure from the gawky pieces of yesteryear.

Some believe that earthsones carry metaphysical powers like healing, calming, or stimulating properties. While this seems to represent a small niche, we are seeing more and more “spiritual beads.” Whether customers appreciate the earthstones’ spiritual or aesthetic properties is up for debate.

Jewelry has traditionally been used to denote status. In ancient Rome, for instance, only certain military ranks could wear rings. Since the antiquity, monarchs have adorned crowns and scepters with precious gems. Until recently, jewelry designers priced semi-precious stones in a prohibitive manner – perhaps $600 onyx bracelets helped the look gain traction in Los Angeles. However, we are finally seeing beaded earthstones from a brand named DyOH (pronounced “D-Y-Oh”) that makes $40 onyx bracelets. Whether inspired by celebrities, ancient history, natural earth-derived style, anti-bling, or metaphysics earthstone jewelry has diverse appeal.

RVCA sponsoring Fedor on CBS Primetime

By now we know that RVCA is one of the most fashionable brands sponsoring MMA athletes. RVCA is an authentic brand, with roots in art, action sports, and fashion. Fedor Emelianenko is an authentic fighter who knows how to win.

Fedor`s two biggest fights in North America were with Affliction’s promotion, where he dominated Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski to win the WAMMA Heavyweight title on pay per view.

Now Strikeforce is the latest to market Fedor to a US audience. They are taking the biggest gamble yet: putting Fedor on network television, headlining Strikeforce`s attempt to fill the Elite XC void on CBS in front of an estimated 6.5 million viewers. It’s interesting to note that Fedor continues to avoid UFC. The obstacle to a UFC / Fedor relationship seems to be M-1 Global, which acts as both Fedor`s management and a fight promotion of which Fedor is part owner.

RVCA and MMA seemed an unlikely pair, but turned out to be kick-ass combination. RVCA sponsors BJ Penn, Vitor Belfort, and Fedor. We’re looking forward to Fedor’s primetime non-pay-per-view fight against Brett Rogers and expect the RVCA-clad Fedor to take care of business.

As summer becomes a lucid memory, fall fashion traditionally offers an opportunity to stow away summer pieces, retread old outerwear favorites, and experiment with layering new pieces. On the business side fashion trade shows and markets are normally packed with brands competing to unveil the next hot look for the cold seasons ahead.

Brand innovation for fall ’09 was minimal. Designers took already popular plaids and checks, added brighter colors, and shrank the patterns. A surging category of “micro-checks” emerged. Similar to the plaids and checkers from which micro-checks descended, summer’s prevailing trend is just getting started.

It’s not surprising that a trend is born in California. But this past summer, the style of the moment did not gain traction in Los Angeles alone. While Hollywood can single handedly launch a fashion craze, plaid-appeal accelerated even further south. With influence from western Americana heritage, popularized by the action sports cultures in San Diego and Orange County, and certified by the A-list, a fashion movement materialized.

To be fair plaids are not a recent creation. The patterns first appeared with Scottish and Irish “tartan” fabrics dating back to the 3rd century AD. In modern fashion, haute couture has used these patterns for decades, Burberry most recognizably. But once action athletes and celebrities got involved, a critical mass took interest.

With plaids and checkers in at the moment, look for large prints to give way to subtler micro-patterns. Also look for bolder color palettes and unusually bright colors for fall. Judging by what we’ve seen at the past trade shows and markets, these patterned button ups should last well into 2010.
